Mayor Duff Christmas Yuletide Report
Man, I Love Living Here!
By Tommy Duff

“Man I Love Living Here!”
From my perch here on the balcony of my new digs at the Sunwatch Condo Complex I can see a hint of the approaching season. I’m anticipating that soon the glimmering intercostal waters will be reflecting not just our incredible sunsets but the red, green and blue Christmas lights of floating Yuletide flotillas. In our wonderland you can find Santa aboard Sea Rays, Bayliners, Wellcrafts and once in a while a classic Chris- Craft.
Speaking of the season and the spirit I was privileged to attend Betty Seurynch and Jillian Willard’s annual Toys for Tots party. Each year they extract hoards of toys from the generous locals and raise cash by raffling off gift certificates from merchants they have spent all year buttering up. Of course, they may have had a libation and a meal or two in the process.
This year they found a recipient for the booty at a local charitable foundation. Coreena Downey, Executive Director of Foundation Village tells us that, given this economy, had they not heard out of the blue from Betty and Jillian, there would have been no Christmas for their clients. Grand job, Ladies!
Well, it’s a gorgeous Sunday morning and I’m off to Clearwater Country Club. Not that I’m much of a golfer (did I hear some one say “duffer”) but Greg and Rebecca McClimans have done a grand job of creating a renew vibrancy at our local links. It’s also a good value and setting for breakfast and lunch. Not to mention the warm smile I will get from Mickele as she goes into auto-pilot, already knowing my food and spirit wishes. Jolley Trolley Report
By Tommy Duff
06/23/11
From my perch aboard the Jolley Trolley, I’m headed in style and comfort from my Island Estates digs to enjoy an evening on our world class beach. Wow, how impressive this scenic and inviting ride to my destination is.
I‘ve surrendered my one whole one buck (that’s the old man’s fare) to Captain Ron who is at the helm today. His friendly greeting and banter presents the feeling of a chauffeur, not just to some bus stop, but rather it’s as if he‘s dropping me off in my backyard. With the tourists aboard, Ron is full of insider information and helpful directions delivered with his unique humor. Grand job, Ambassador Ron!
As lovely as the scene at the beach appears, it doesn’t just “happen”. On my usual early morning walks to the beach there is always the buzzing of crews from Kevin Dunbar’s Parks Department team. Led by the key Beach Walk over-seer, Mitch Moen, the streets are being swept, plantings being cared for, and the beach sand undergoes it’s daily raking. Oh, the things that folks leave behind!
But now all is in order and we are “looking good”! So inviting, in fact, that many of our visitors will become future homebuyers and investors. Some will move their families here and many times their extended families. They may relocate their businesses and create new jobs. Others will go back home telling of their good times and encouraging friends to make a visit to our paradise. They may even alert their company’s meeting and convention planners about their great experience and all we have to offer.
Well this is my stop. I’m off to the Sandpearl Resort for a stroll down past the pool to Tate’s Island Grill. Master of guitar Sal Belloist will be set up beachside to sing down the evening sun. There will be the traditional ringing of the sundown gong and, though tonight will be too summery to fully enjoy the warmth of the fire pit, there will still be the glow of camaraderie amongst the people who have gathered. Special Teacher Appreciation Report

Special Teacher Appreciation Week Report
By Tommy Duff
4/28/11
From my perch, sitting crossed-legged here on the floor of Ms. Clarkson’s second-grade class at Belcher Elementary School, I can see I have a lot to learn. Deciding to share some time each month as a volunteer was a great idea and I know I’ll be the one who gets the
most out of the sessions. So far the biggest thing I’m learning is the amount of preparation
necessary for each day’s lessons. Then there is the amount of record keeping required in tracking each student’s progress. The school day may end for the students at a seemingly
early hour, but it certainly doesn’t for the staff. They wind up spending a tremendous amount of their own time ensuring that their students don’t know about budget cuts. On the way home many teachers find themselves stopping for unavailable supplies, the cost of which, of course, comes out of their own pocket. That is dedication.
There is a recent report out regarding this country’s return to the top in education. Atop the list is the need to raise the regard we have for our teachers. It says we must also give them better support and recruit top level university students to fill the ranks. My short time as a volunteer has convinced me that it’s true. May 2nd through 6th is National Teacher Appreciation Week. What a great time to start. And it can start with you! Retired? Volunteer at your local school – you will love it. Own a business? Support a school project. Here is an important one… if you are a parent of a student, spend just a little more time each week at the kitchen table with their school work. And let us all go out of our way this coming week to make teachers aware that we think they are special!
Well, now I’ll try to get these legs uncrossed and stand up. I need to head to one of our great community libraries. There are a few new words I need to look up! Man, I love living here!

Phillies Spring Training Report
Man, I Love Living Here!
Philadelphia Phillies – Spring Training Baseball
By Tommy Duff
4/07/11
As I view another Phillies spring training game from my perch here at Bright House Field’s fabulous tiki-deck, I can’t help but reflect on how much of an impact this place has had on our community.
Walking up to the bar, which is overrun by hoards of fans, I’m greeted by a master of mix-oligy, Tommy Schaar, who knows and has in hand my favorite selection. The thing is, Tommy knows the favorite selection of thousands of yearly visitors to our area. Even though there are hundreds of thirsty souls waving dollars and whistling for attention, he and the rest of the bar staff calmly traverse from one “emergency” to the next serving up their choice of gratifying grog. This is the kind of hospitality that makes our visitors want to return year after year.
Dan Madden, the Group Sales Manager, tells me attendance at today’s game is around 9,500 fans, which is a bit shy of the new single-game record of 10,912. Already this year the season attendance record has been pushed up to 149,758 and there is still another game to go. Now, it may only seem like a baseball game, but the draw of that many fans from all over the world each year does so much more for our economy. It fills our hotels and restaurants, sells real estate, draws business, creates jobs and does wonders for our tax coffers. Not to mention what a great way to spend time with family and friends. That is a home run for Clearwater. The game is over, the Phillies win and so do we all.
Now I’m off to the beach, which today means a stop at the Palm Pavilion were the Hamilton Clan serves up the best sunsets this side of sunrise. Man, I Love Living Here!
